How to achieve consistent golf shots

Wondering how the pros manage to have such consistent golf shots? Well, you are not alone.

If you want to hone your golfing skills, you should focus on maintaining consistent golf shots. Knowing that your ball is going to go where you want it to all of the time, not just most of the time, is the key to a great game. A lot of players have the tendency to force the golf club to sit too vertically on the downswing as they are looking from down the line. This can lead to steep divots, too much turf, or a ball curving to the right.

These mistakes are all caused by your setup. For instance, if your arms are extended too far from your body because there is too much of a bend in your upper body, this is described as tilt (and far too much of it). If this isn’t fixed, you will see your club becoming too vertical on the backswing. The entire backswing will become far too steep, and the club may even stick into the ground – not the most impressive feat if you are golfing with the boss!

If your stance is taller at address and you align the top of the golf club to be closer to your belt buckle, you should be able to avoid this problem. This is only the first step to creating consistent shots, however, because nothing comes without practice! Even with the perfect initial stance, you need to be confident in your shot. Here is a drill that you can use to hone your skills.

The 15, 10, 5 Drill for consistent golf shots

Take a practice swing at the ball, sitting 15 inches above the ground. This may seem ridiculously high, but trust me – by aiming so high the swing will take a more rounded shape, similar to a baseball swing, and you can square up the clubface after your swing through.

Then, move the ball 10 inches above the ground and watch your form.

Next, onto 5 inches. You’re getting this now right?

The final step is to take a swing at regular height, on a tee.

Just remember the tips above, and after running through this golf drill a few times, you should notice a marked improvement and you will be well on your way to more consistent golf shots.
