Sand shot bunker tips
Looking for sand shot bunker tips?
You might think you’ve seen everything when it comes to getting a ball out of the bunker. But there is a little known golfing secret that is whispered among the pros about a sand shot that will get you out of a tight spot. The first time I saw this shot was watching the British Opens, when I witnessed Phil Rogers swing a bunker shot, the likes of which I’ve never seen.
How this golf sand shot is set up is important. If it’s not set up exactly as I describe, it simply cannot be done. The ball must be located in the sand, very close to the back bank of the bunker. Then, you must make note of the slope of the bunker – it should be so steep that you can’t possibly draw the club back as your normally would.
Sand shot bunker tips
Here are the sand shot steps. Make sure you follow them perfectly and practice – I’ve seen people read these bunker tips and walk onto the green perfectly confident, and then make a complete mess of the shot.
- Step up to the ball and assume your regular trap-shot stance
- Pick the club up vertically, but break your arms (think of chopping wood – this is the motion that you want to emulate)
- Swing down about 2 inches high on the ball, with an overly strong right hand action
It is important that you have no follow through here. The club will bury itself in the sand and you will muff the shot. I know it looks like the arc of your shot is vertical, but you ball will fly straight and true. Just keep the woodcutter in mind and eventually you will perfect this sand shot to get yourself out of a pinch.
